About Châtillon
Châtillon
Châtillon sits in the Aosta Valley at the confluence of the Marmore torrent and the Dora Baltea river, roughly 30 kilometres east of Aosta city. The town is defined by the 14th-century Castello di Ussel, a square-plan fortress built by the Challant family that overlooks the valley from a rocky spur above the old quarter. The historic centre clusters around the Parish Church of Sant'Orso and a pedestrian high street lined with stone arcades typical of the lower valley.
The town draws two distinct visitor profiles. Outdoor travellers use Châtillon as a staging point for the Cervino-Matterhorn area via the SS46 road through Valtournenche, reaching Breuil-Cervinia in about 25 kilometres. Casino visitors arrive for the Grand Casino de Saint-Vincent, located 3 kilometres west and one of the largest gaming venues in Italy, open since 1955. Both groups benefit from Châtillon's position on the A5 motorway, with the Châtillon–Saint-Vincent exit providing direct access.
The town sits at approximately 540 metres elevation, keeping temperatures milder than higher valley resorts. Regional rail service connects Châtillon to Aosta (journey time around 20 minutes) and to Turin's Porta Nuova station in under two hours.
