About Ayas
Ayas
Ayas is a high-altitude municipality in the Aosta Valley, northwestern Italy, sitting between 1,600 m and over 3,000 m above sea level in the Monte Rosa massif. Ayas comprises two distinct hamlets — Champoluc and Antagnod — with the separate commune of Brusson sitting down-valley as a frequent base for Monte Rosa skiing. Champoluc serves as the main resort hub and anchors the Monterosa Ski area, a cross-border circuit linking Ayas with Gressoney and Alagna Valsesia across roughly 180 km of marked runs.
Winter draws the largest share of visitors: skiers and snowboarders targeting long descents from Colle Sarezza and Punta Indren, and backcountry tourers heading toward the Monte Rosa glaciers. Summer reverses the crowd but not the appeal — trail runners and hikers use Ayas as a base for the Tour of Monte Rosa, a multi-day loop circling one of the Alps' highest massifs. Mountain bikers follow purpose-built singletracks above Champoluc, while the alp pastures around Antagnod attract families on gentler day walks.
The valley floor sits roughly 120 km northeast of Turin via the A5 motorway and the SS506 road. Ayas has no railway station; the nearest rail access is Verrès on the Aosta Valley main line, connected to Champoluc by regional bus. Most accommodation is concentrated in Champoluc, ranging from family-run guesthouses to four-star alpine hotels, with smaller guesthouses also available in Antagnod.
