Plan your stay in Valtournenche, Italy — a Matterhorn-facing alpine village at 1,524 m with ski access to Cervinia and Zermatt's 360 km piste network.
Valtournenche is a mountain village in the Aosta Valley, northwestern Italy, sitting at roughly 1,524 metres above sea level in the valley that leads directly to the Matterhorn. The peak — known in Italian as Cervino — dominates the skyline and has shaped the village's identity for over a century. Valtournenche sits about 8 kilometres north of Châtillon and connects via road and lift infrastructure to Cervinia, the higher resort at 2,050 metres. The two share a ski area that extends across the Swiss border to Zermatt, covering more than 360 kilometres of marked runs.
Most visitors come for alpine sports. In winter, skiers and snowboarders access high-altitude terrain that holds snow reliably from November through May. In summer, the same lifts carry hikers and mountain bikers toward glaciated ridges and long-distance trails, including sections of the Alta Via 1, a classic traverse of the Aosta Valley. Climbers use Valtournenche as a base for routes on the Matterhorn's Italian ridge, first climbed in 1865.
The village centre retains stone-built architecture typical of the region and offers a quieter, lower-cost alternative to Cervinia for accommodation. The local currency is the euro. Valtournenche is served by the A5 motorway via the Châtillon exit, approximately 140 kilometres from Turin.
