About Challand-Saint-Anselme
Challand-Saint-Anselme
Challand-Saint-Anselme sits in the Ayas Valley of Valle d'Aosta, roughly 60 km east of Aosta city. The municipality is divided into several hamlets spread across terraced slopes at elevations between 700 m and 2,000 m. The medieval Castello di Graines, a 13th-century tower keep perched on a rocky outcrop above the valley floor, is the area's defining landmark and one of the best-preserved fortifications in the region.
Visitors arrive primarily for outdoor pursuits. Winter brings access to the Brusson ski area, which shares lift connections with nearby Estoul and offers around 30 km of pistes suited to intermediate skiers. In summer the same terrain opens to mountain bikers and hikers tracing trails toward the high pastures of the Vallone di Cuneaz. The village also sits on the route toward Champoluc and the broader Monterosa ski domain, making it a quieter, lower-cost base compared to the resort centres further up the valley.
Accommodation in Challand-Saint-Anselme consists mainly of small family-run hotels and agriturismo properties. The nearest rail station is Verrès, approximately 12 km west, with regional trains connecting to Aosta and Turin. Local buses run several times daily between Verrès and the upper valley hamlets.
