About Champorcher
Champorcher
Champorcher sits at 1,420 metres in the Gran Paradiso foothills, Aosta Valley, roughly 30 km southeast of Aosta city. The village marks the gateway to Parco Naturale del Mont Avic, Valle d'Aosta's oldest nature reserve, established in 1989 to protect ibex, chamois, and glacial lakes. The surrounding peaks reach above 3,000 metres, making this one of the quieter alpine corners of northern Italy.
Hikers arrive from June through September to walk the trails around Lago Miserin at 2,580 metres, where a 17th-century sanctuary stands beside the water. In winter, Champorcher operates a small ski area suited to families and beginners, distinct from the larger Cervinia and Courmayeur resorts. Visitors tend to be Italian and French, drawn by the absence of large crowds and the traditional stone architecture of the hamlets.
The Valle del Lys and the medieval Bard fortress are reachable within an hour by car. Champorcher has no train station; the nearest rail connection is at Pont-Saint-Martin, approximately 15 km downvalley. Most properties are small family-run hotels or mountain refuges open seasonally.
