About Gressoney-Saint-Jean

Gressoney-Saint-Jean

Gressoney-Saint-Jean sits at 1,385 metres in the Lys Valley, Valle d'Aosta, at the foot of the Monte Rosa massif — the second-highest mountain range in the Alps. The village is the cultural heart of the Walser community, a Germanic-speaking people who settled this valley in the 13th century. Their influence is still visible in the timber-framed stone houses lining the valley floor and in the Töitschu dialect still spoken locally.

Most visitors come for Monterosa Ski, a three-valley circuit connecting Gressoney, Champoluc, and Alagna Valsesia across 180 km of pistes. The ski area reaches 3,275 metres at Punta Indren, making it one of the highest lift-accessed ski zones in Italy. Summer draws hikers onto the Alta Via trail network, with routes to the Gabiet lake at 2,379 metres and guided glacier crossings on Monte Rosa. Castle Savoia, built between 1899 and 1904 for Queen Margherita of Italy, stands on a pine-forested hillside above the village and is open to visitors from June to September.

Accommodation clusters around the village centre near the Gressoney-Saint-Jean cable car base station. The nearest international airport is Turin Caselle, roughly 120 km southwest via the A5 motorway through the Aosta Valley. Aosta city is approximately 55 km by road.
