About Innichen - San Candido
San Candido (Innichen)
San Candido (German: Innichen) sits at 1,175 m in the upper Puster Valley, South Tyrol, 5 km from the Austrian border. The town anchors one of Europe's leading Nordic skiing circuits: the Dolomiten Nordicarena hosts World Cup cross-country races and connects to over 220 km of groomed trails across the Alta Pusteria network. In summer, the same valley floor becomes a cycling and hiking corridor leading southeast toward the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, roughly 14 km away.
The 12th-century Collegiate Church of San Candido — a Romanesque basilica completed around 1280 — stands at the town centre and is considered the most significant Romanesque monument in the eastern Alps. Its frescoed crypt and carved stone portal draw architectural historians alongside outdoor visitors. South Tyrol's bilingual character shapes daily life: menus, signage, and hotels operate in both Italian and German, and local cuisine combines Tyrolean staples — speck, Schlutzkrapfen, Graukäse — with northern Italian traditions.
Guests arrive mainly from Germany, Austria, and northern Italy. The ski season runs December through March; July and August bring hikers and cyclists. San Candido station sits on the Puster Valley Railway, linking the town to Lienz in Austria in roughly 40 minutes and to Fortezza toward Bolzano in about 90 minutes.
