About Sexten - Sesto
Sexten - Sesto in the Sexten Dolomites
Sesto (German: Sexten) sits at 1,310 metres in the Pusteria Valley, South Tyrol, at the foot of the Sexten Dolomites — a UNESCO World Heritage mountain group since 2009. The village borders Austria to the north and lies roughly 25 km east of Dobbiaco. Its most-photographed skyline is the so-called Sundial (Sonnenuhr): six peaks including Croda Rossa, Tre Scarperi, and the Sesto Dolomites' own Tre Cime di Lavaredo access trail, which starts at Rifugio Auronzo, 16 km south via the SP48 toll road.
Visitors arrive in two distinct waves. Summer hikers follow the Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 4 and the Strada delle Malghe, a high-pasture circuit reaching 2,200 metres. Winter guests come for the Tre Cime Dolomites ski area connecting Sesto with Moso (Moos) and San Candido (Innichen), with 80 km of marked pistes above 1,400 metres. Cross-country skiers use the 80 km Dolomiti Nordic Ski network based largely in the Sesto valley floor. The village is bilingual — German is the primary spoken language, Italian the administrative one — reflecting South Tyrol's Austrian heritage pre-1919.
The nearest train station is San Candido (Innichen), 9 km west on the Pusteria Valley railway (Bolzano–Lienz line), with connections to Bolzano in about 90 minutes. Most hotels in Sesto operate on a half-board basis standard to South Tyrolean Alpine resorts.
