About Toblach - Dobbiaco

Toblach - Dobbiaco

Toblach (Dobbiaco in Italian) sits at 1,256 metres above sea level in the Puster Valley (Val Pusteria) of South Tyrol, where the Austrian border lies just 10 kilometres to the east. The town is the main gateway to the Drei Zinnen Nature Park — home to the three rock towers (Tre Cime di Lavaredo) that define the eastern Dolomites. A UNESCO World Heritage landscape surrounds it on three sides.

Visitors arrive year-round. In winter, the ToblachCortina cross-country ski trail runs 27 km south along a former railway bed and ranks among the longest prepared Nordic routes in the Alps. In summer, hikers and cyclists follow the same Dolomites Bike Path (Ciclabile delle Dolomiti) through the valley floor. The small Toblacher See lake, a five-minute walk from the town centre, freezes for skating in cold winters. Gustav Mahler composed his 9th Symphony here in 1909, staying in a farmhouse on the eastern edge of town — the building still stands and carries a memorial plaque.

The town centre clusters around the 15th-century parish church of St John the Baptist on the main square. Most hotels concentrate within 500 metres of the square or along the road toward Lake Dobbiaco. The nearest airport is Innsbruck (115 km) or Bolzano (110 km); direct train service on the Val Pusteria railway connects Toblach to Fortezza and the Brenner main line in under 90 minutes.
