About Roccabianca

Roccabianca

Roccabianca sits on the south bank of the Po River in Parma province, Emilia-Romagna, roughly 30 km northwest of Parma city. The comune is defined by the Rocca Sanvitale, a 15th-century fortified castle that anchors the village centre and gives the town its name — rocca bianca, or white fortress. The surrounding Po plain is flat agricultural land dedicated largely to the production of Culatello di Zibello, a cured ham with DOP status whose production zone covers this stretch of river fog country.

Visitors arrive mainly for agritourism and food tourism. The Bassa Parmense — the low-lying river district — draws Italian travellers seeking slow food experiences, cycling routes along Po embankments, and heritage buildings tied to the Sanvitale noble family. The nearest rail connection is Casalmaggiore, across the river in Lombardy, or Parma station with onward road transfer. Accommodation in Roccabianca itself is limited to a handful of agriturismi and small guesthouses; travellers requiring more choice typically base themselves in Parma and day-trip to the area.

The municipality covers approximately 64 km² and has a population of around 3,000. The Po River here is navigable and seasonal boat excursions operate from nearby Polesine Parmense, 4 km to the northwest, where the historic Antica Corte Pallavicina estate also produces and exhibits Culatello.
