Hotels in Parma

Parma sits in the Po Valley of Emilia-Romagna, roughly 120 km southeast of Milan and 30 km north of the Apennine foothills. The city built its international reputation on two products: Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, aged a minimum of 12 months in local caseifici, and Prosciutto di Parma, cured in the hills around Langhirano. Both carry protected designation of origin status and have shaped the local economy for centuries. The historic center clusters around the Piazza del Duomo, where the 12th-century Romanesque cathedral holds Correggio's celebrated fresco of the Assumption of the Virgin, painted between 1526 and 1530, directly above the nave.

Visitors arrive for food tourism, opera, and art. The Teatro Regio, opened in 1829 under Marie-Louise of Austria, remains one of Italy's most respected opera houses — its season runs from October through April. The Galleria Nazionale inside the Palazzo della Pilotta holds works by Correggio, Parmigianino, and Leonardo da Vinci. Parma also carries a strong student population from its university, founded in 962 AD, which keeps the café culture and cycling culture active year-round.

Parma holds the title of UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, awarded in 2015. The main train station connects directly to Milan Centrale in roughly 55 minutes by high-speed rail and to Bologna in about 35 minutes. Most hotels and accommodation concentrate within walking distance of the Piazza Garibaldi.
