The clifftop Liberty-style palazzo at Piazza Tasso 34, Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria has anchored the edge of Sorrento's volcanic tufa cliff since 1834, with private gardens dropping toward a sea-level boat dock 50 metres below.

Rooms in the older Vittoria wing retain original frescoed ceilings and period furniture; those in the newer Excelsior block trade ornament for wider terraces over the Bay of Naples. Vesuvius sits directly across the water and is readable from most sea-facing rooms without a telephoto lens.

The hotel is two minutes on foot from Sorrento's Circumvesuviana station, which links to Pompeii in 30 minutes and Naples in 70. Ferries to Capri and Positano depart from the Marina Piccola, reached by the hotel's own cliff lift.
