About Kuching
Kuching: Sarawak's River Capital on Borneo's Western Edge
Kuching sits on the Sarawak River in Malaysian Borneo, roughly 700 km southwest of Kota Kinabalu. The city of around 700,000 is Sarawak's state capital and the main access point for Bako National Park, 37 km northeast — one of Borneo's oldest protected reserves, gazetted in 1957 and home to proboscis monkeys and pitcher plants. The Waterfront Promenade stretches 1.5 km along the south bank, passing the Square Tower (completed 1879) and the Sarawak Museum, one of Southeast Asia's oldest natural-history collections, opened in 1891. The Indian Street and Carpenter Street corridor in the historic core preserves Hokkien shophouses dating from the late Brooke Raj era (1841–1941).
Where to Stay
Most properties concentrate in three zones: Padungan, the shophouse strip south of the river favoured by boutique guesthouses; the Waterfront precinct near the Fort Margherita ferry jetty, where mid-range and 4-star hotels face the river; and Jalan Tabuan, a quieter inland corridor with chain hotels and serviced apartments. Budget rooms start around MYR 80/night; riverside 4-star properties typically run MYR 350–550.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Grab ride-hail operates city-wide; Kuching has no urban rail.
- Weather: Heavy rainfall peaks June–October; pack a compact umbrella for afternoon downpours.
- Currency: Malaysian Ringgit (MYR); ATMs are plentiful along Jalan Padungan.
- Airport: Kuching International Airport (KCH) is 11 km south of the Waterfront, roughly a 20-minute drive.
