About Ulcinj
Ulcinj: Montenegro's Southernmost Adriatic Port
Ulcinj sits at Montenegro's southern tip, 25 km from the Albanian border and roughly 90 km south of Budva. The city's Old Town (Stari Grad) rises on a rocky promontory above the Adriatic, with walls dating to the 3rd century BC and later reinforced under Venetian rule in the 15th century. A large Albanian-speaking community gives Ulcinj a distinct cultural character not found elsewhere in Montenegro — mosques and Orthodox churches stand within blocks of each other in the lower town.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster along Mala Plaža (Small Beach) immediately below the old ramparts, or stretch south toward Velika Plaža, a 12 km sandy beach regarded as one of the longest on the eastern Adriatic. The Valdanos olive grove bay, 4 km north, offers quieter accommodation surrounded by centuries-old trees. Budget guesthouses dominate; larger resort-style hotels concentrate near Velika Plaža's northern end.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Buses from Podgorica run approximately every two hours; the journey takes around 2.5 hours.
- Best months: July and August bring peak crowds; late June and September offer warm water with fewer visitors.
- Currency: Euros are accepted everywhere; Albanian lek is not necessary for a Ulcinj stay.
- Beach access: Velika Plaža has free public sections; private beach clubs charge per sunbed.
