About Tangier

The most practical bases in Tangier are the Medina for historic atmosphere within walking distance of the Grand Socco and Kasbah; Ville Nouvelle (the French-built new town) for wider streets, cafés, and transport links; and the Corniche/Malabata seafront strip for sea views along the Strait of Gibraltar. Most visitors stay two to three nights; Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport sits 15 km south-east of the centre, roughly 20 minutes by taxi.

Where to Stay in Each Quarter

Medina and Kasbah suit travelers who want riad-style accommodation, narrow alley souks, and the 17th-century Kasbah Palace (now the Museum of Moroccan Arts). Ville Nouvelle — laid out during the French and Spanish protectorate era (1912–1956) — offers mid-range hotels along Boulevard Mohammed V and easy access to the ferry terminal, which runs crossings to Tarifa, Spain, in under an hour. The Malabata Corniche east of the port is quieter, with larger resort-style properties facing the strait.

Getting Around

The Grand Taxis (cream-coloured Mercedes saloons) cover cross-city routes at fixed shared fares. Petit taxis (blue in Tangier) handle shorter in-city trips with metered fares. The Tangier-Ville train station connects to Casablanca in approximately 5 hours 30 minutes via the Al-Boraq high-speed rail as far as Kenitra since 2018. Ferries to Algeciras and Tarifa depart from the Tanger Med Port, 40 km east — not the city port.

Practical Tips

  • Currency: Moroccan Dirham (MAD); ATMs available in Ville Nouvelle near Boulevard Pasteur.
  • Ferry terminal: Book Tanger Med crossings to Spain separately from city-centre hotels — the port is a 40-minute drive east.
  • Language: Arabic and Darija are primary; French and Spanish widely understood.
  • Dress: Pack modest clothing for Medina visits, especially around the Grand Mosque.
