About Christchurch
Christchurch: Garden City Rebuilt on the Canterbury Plains
Christchurch sits on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, 360 km south of Wellington by air. The city of roughly 400,000 people is the main gateway to the Canterbury region and the Southern Alps, with Aoraki/Mount Cook reachable in about three hours by road. The February 2011 earthquake reshaped the city centre permanently; what replaced the rubble is one of the most architecturally experimental downtowns in Australasia — the Cardboard Cathedral (2013), the ReStart Mall container precinct, and the Riverside Market on the Avon River corridor are direct products of that rebuild.
Where to Stay in Christchurch
Hotels cluster in three zones: the Central City around Cathedral Square, the quieter Merivale suburb 3 km north, and Addington south-west of the CBD near the stadium. The Christchurch Art Gallery and Hagley Park — 165 hectares of gardens and sports fields — anchor the western edge of the central hotel belt. Visitors arriving for alpine skiing at Mount Hutt (95 km west) or wildlife cruises out of Kaikōura (180 km north) typically use central hotels as a base.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Christchurch International Airport is 11 km north-west of Cathedral Square; the Purple Line bus covers the route in about 30 minutes.
- Best season: November–March brings warm, dry Canterbury weather; July–August suits ski-season visitors.
- Currency: New Zealand Dollar (NZD); most hotels quote rates in NZD.
