Christchurch: Garden City Rebuilt on the Canterbury Plains

Christchurch sits on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, 360 km south of Wellington by air. The city of roughly 400,000 people is the main gateway to the Canterbury region and the Southern Alps, with Aoraki/Mount Cook reachable in about three hours by road. Visitors arriving for alpine skiing at Mount Hutt (95 km west) or wildlife cruises out of Kaikōura (180 km north) typically use central hotels as a base.
