About Akaroa
Akaroa: French Colonial Port on Banks Peninsula
Akaroa sits at the head of a drowned volcanic crater on Banks Peninsula, 85 km southeast of Christchurch via State Highway 75. French settlers arrived in August 1840 aboard the Comte de Paris, just weeks after the Treaty of Waitangi transferred sovereignty to Britain — making Akaroa the only French colonial settlement in New Zealand. That history survives in street names like Rue Jolie and Rue Lavaud, in the painted timber cottages along Beach Road, and in the Langlois-Eteveneaux Cottage (c. 1845), one of the oldest European structures in the South Island.
Where to Stay and What Draws Visitors
The harbour draws wildlife tourism centred on Hector's dolphins, the world's smallest and rarest dolphin species, resident year-round in the bay. Cruise ships anchor offshore between October and April, briefly swelling the population of roughly 600 residents. Accommodation ranges from heritage B&Bs in the village centre to self-contained cottages on the surrounding hill farms. Properties cluster along Beach Road and the hillside streets above, with harbour views standard at most.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Allow 90 minutes from Christchurch; the Hilltop viewpoint at the crater rim offers the first harbour view.
- Timing: Book ahead for summer weekends (December–February) — village capacity fills quickly.
- Wildlife tours: Dolphin swim permits are capped; reserve swim slots at least a week in advance in peak season.
