About Dunedin

Dunedin: Scotland's Echo at the Foot of Otago

Dunedin sits at the head of Otago Harbour on New Zealand's South Island, roughly 362 km south of Christchurch. Founded in 1848 by Scottish Free Church settlers, the city's name derives from the Scottish Gaelic word for Edinburgh. That heritage is visible in the streetscape: the Railway Station (completed 1906) features Flemish Renaissance stonework, and dozens of Victorian and Edwardian buildings line the central grid. The University of Otago, established in 1869, is New Zealand's oldest university and shapes the character of the city year-round, drawing around 20,000 students.

Wildlife and the Otago Peninsula

The Otago Peninsula extends 30 km east of the city centre and hosts the only mainland royal albatross breeding colony in the world, at Taiaroa Head. Yellow-eyed penguins and New Zealand sea lions also haul out along the peninsula's eastern beaches. Most wildlife tours depart from the Portobello area and run under 90 minutes from the city. Baldwin Street in the North East Valley holds a Guinness record claim as one of the world's steepest residential streets, with a gradient of 1 in 2.86 at its steepest section.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: The central city is walkable; the Otago Peninsula requires a car or guided tour.
  • Best season: November to February for wildlife activity and milder temperatures averaging 18–20 °C.
  • Airport: Dunedin Airport (DUD) sits 30 km south of the city centre; shuttle buses run on a fixed schedule.
