About Mount Cook Village

Mount Cook Village: Alpine Gateway to Aoraki

Mount Cook Village sits at 760 m elevation in the Mackenzie Basin, South Island, New Zealand, 330 km southwest of Christchurch. Fewer than 100 permanent residents occupy this narrow valley floor beneath Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest peak at 3,724 m. Sir Edmund Hillary trained on these slopes before his 1953 Everest ascent.

Visitors arrive primarily to walk the Hooker Valley Track — a 10 km return trail ending at a glacial lake with direct views of Aoraki's south face — and to tackle the Mueller and Sealy Tarns routes. The village lies within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, established in 2012, one of the largest such reserves on Earth.

Getting Around

No public transport serves the village. State Highway 80 connects it to Twizel, 105 km south, where most rental car drivers join the main road network. Shuttle services run from Twizel and Lake Tekapo. Trailheads, the visitor centre, The Hermitage hotel, and the camping ground are all within 1 km of each other.

Practical Tips

  • Season: November to April offers the most stable walking conditions; winter brings ice and possible road closures.
  • Booking: The Hermitage and the YHA fill weeks ahead in summer — allow at least six weeks' lead time.
  • Weather: Conditions change rapidly at altitude; carry waterproof layers regardless of the morning forecast.
