About Karachi

Karachi: Pakistan's Port Megalopolis on the Arabian Sea

Karachi sits on the Arabian Sea coast in Sindh province, roughly 1,400 km south of Islamabad. Founded as a fishing settlement, it grew into South Asia's largest port city after Pakistan's independence in 1947 and now holds an estimated 20 million residents — making it one of the world's most populous urban centres. The city drives nearly 20% of Pakistan's GDP, and its port handles the majority of the country's international trade.

Visitors arrive for diverse reasons: business at the Karachi Export Processing Zone, heritage walks through the Saddar district's colonial-era buildings, and coastal escapes to French Beach or Hawkes Bay, both within 30 km of the city centre. The National Museum of Pakistan in Burns Road area holds Indus Valley artefacts dating to 3000 BCE. Clifton Beach and the adjacent Do Darya restaurant strip draw weekend crowds from across the city.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: Ride-hailing apps (InDrive, Careem) are widely available; metered taxis are scarce.
  • Currency: Pakistani Rupee (PKR); ATMs are common in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and Clifton areas.
  • Climate: October–February is the cooler, drier season; June–August brings high humidity from the southwest monsoon.
  • Neighbourhoods: Business travellers favour DHA and Clifton; budget hotels cluster around Saddar and Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
