About Islamabad
Islamabad: Pakistan's Planned Capital on the Margalla Foothills
Islamabad became Pakistan's federal capital in 1966, replacing Karachi. Designed by Greek firm Doxiadis Associates, the city follows a strict grid of numbered sectors radiating south from the Margalla Hills National Park — 17,386 hectares of forested ridge that frames the northern skyline. The Faisal Mosque, completed in 1986 and still among the largest mosques by capacity in South Asia, anchors the F-6 and F-7 sectors and serves as the city's most recognisable reference point.
Where to Stay in Islamabad
Most hotels cluster in F-6 (Supermarket), F-7 (Jinnah Super), and G-6, within 3–5 km of the diplomatic enclave. Blue Area, the central commercial spine along Jinnah Avenue, holds several business-class properties. Travellers heading to Taxila (35 km northwest, a UNESCO-listed Gandharan site) or Murree (50 km northeast) often use Islamabad as a base.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Ride-hailing apps (Careem, inDriver) cover most sectors; metered taxis are scarce.
- Best months: Mid-October through mid-March avoids the June–August monsoon humidity.
- Airport: Islamabad International Airport (ISB) opened in 2018, located 30 km southwest of Blue Area; the journey takes 35–50 minutes by road.
