Skardu: Gateway to the Karakoram

Skardu sits at 2,228 metres in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan, where the Indus River carves a wide valley flanked by some of the planet's tallest peaks. The city serves as the primary base for expeditions to K2 (8,611 m), the world's second-highest mountain, as well as Broad Peak and Gasherbrum I and II. • Getting there: Skardu Airport (KDU) receives daily PIA flights from Islamabad (55 min); mountain weather causes frequent delays — build buffer days.
• Road access: The Karakoram Highway connects via Gilgit, roughly 7 hours by jeep from Gilgit.
• Best season: June through September for trekking; April–May for Deosai wildflower blooms.
• Altitude: Acclimatise one full day before ascending to Deosai or higher trailheads.
