About Nārān

Nārān: Gateway to Kaghan Valley's High-Altitude Lakes

Nārān sits at 2,409 metres in the Kaghan Valley, Mansehra District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, roughly 220 km northeast of Islamabad via the N-15 highway. The town anchors the upper valley and serves as the primary staging point for Lake Saif-ul-Malook, a glacial lake at 3,224 metres that draws Pakistani and international visitors from June through September. The Kunhar River runs through the centre of town, flanked by hotels and guesthouses catering to the summer season rush.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Nārān clusters along the main bazaar strip and along the riverbank. Properties range from basic wooden guesthouses to mid-range hotels with mountain-facing rooms. Most close from November through April when snowfall makes the N-15 impassable above Balakot. Booking ahead is essential in July and August, when the valley receives peak domestic tourism and room rates climb sharply.

Practical Tips

  • Season: Travel between late June and mid-September; the road beyond Nārān to Babusar Pass (4,173 m) typically opens in July.
  • Altitude: Allow one day to acclimatise before attempting Lake Saif-ul-Malook or higher treks.
  • Transport: Shared jeeps from Nārān bazaar run daily to the lake trailhead (approx. 10 km); private jeep hire is available for Lulusar Lake and Ansoo Lake routes.
  • Cash: ATMs are unreliable above Balakot — carry sufficient Pakistani rupees from Mansehra or Islamabad.
