About Hunza

Hunza: Karakoram Valley at 2,438 Metres

Hunza sits in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, enclosed by three of the world's great mountain ranges — the Karakoram, Hindukush, and Himalayas. The valley floor runs roughly 100 km along the Hunza River, with Rakaposhi (7,788 m) and Ultar Sar (7,388 m) dominating the skyline above Karimabad, the main town. The historic Baltit Fort, dating to the 8th century and restored in the 1990s, anchors Karimabad's upper ridge and draws heritage travellers as much as trekkers.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster in Karimabad and the lower settlement of Aliabad, 6 km downvalley. A smaller spread of guesthouses operates in Gulmit (Upper Hunza) near Attabad Lake, a turquoise reservoir formed by a 2010 landslide. Budget guesthouses, mid-range lodges, and a handful of 3-star properties in Karimabad accommodate the April–October peak season.

Practical Tips

  • Access: Hunza lies on the Karakoram Highway (KKH), approximately 600 km north of Islamabad; the nearest airport is Gilgit, roughly 100 km south.
  • Season: April and May bring cherry and apricot blossoms; September and October offer clear skies and autumn foliage.
  • Altitude: Karimabad sits at 2,438 m — allow one day to acclimatise before trekking.
  • Currency: Carry Pakistani rupees in cash; ATMs are limited in Karimabad.
