About Lahore
Lahore: Mughal Monuments and the Walled City
Lahore, Pakistan's second-largest city with a population exceeding 13 million, sits on the Ravi River in Punjab province, roughly 25 km from the Indian border. The Walled City — inhabited for over 1,000 years — anchors the old town, where the Badshahi Mosque (completed 1673) and Lahore Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) stand within walking distance of each other. The Shalimar Gardens, also UNESCO-listed, lie 8 km east of the fort. Travelers arrive for Mughal architecture, one of South Asia's most celebrated food cultures, and a literary and arts scene concentrated around Gulberg and the Liberty Market district.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster in three main zones. Gulberg III and II offer mid-range and upmarket properties close to M.M. Alam Road restaurants. The Old Anarkali area puts guests within 10 minutes' walk of the Delhi Gate and the Walled City bazaars. DHA (Defence Housing Authority) in the south suits business travelers with quieter streets and corporate amenities.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Allama Iqbal International Airport is 15 km east of central Lahore; a metered taxi takes 25–40 minutes.
- Getting around: The Orange Line Metro (opened 2020) runs 27 km through the city; rickshaws and app-based ride services cover last-mile gaps.
- Climate: Summers (May–July) exceed 40 °C; October through March offers cooler, drier conditions suited to sightseeing.
- Currency: Pakistani Rupee (PKR); ATMs are widely available in Gulberg and DHA.
