About Oleiros

Oleiros: Schist Village Gateway in Beira Baixa

Oleiros is a small municipality in the Castelo Branco district of central Portugal, set among the schist hills of Beira Baixa at roughly 700 metres elevation. The territory covers about 462 km² of granite plateaus, pine and eucalyptus forest, and river valleys carved by tributaries of the Zêzere. The village centre retains a medieval street plan, with a 13th-century castle keep and a parish church dating to the 16th century anchoring the historic core.

Where to Stay

Visitors are typically hikers tracing the Aldeias de Xisto (Schist Villages) network, fly-fishers working the Zêzere tributaries, and travellers using Oleiros as a quiet base between Covilhã (55 km northeast) and Castelo Branco (45 km south). The accommodation offer is modest — rural guesthouses and agritourism units dominate, with a handful of small hotels in the village.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: No rail connection; the nearest station is Covilhã on the Beira Baixa line. A car is essential for reaching outlying schist hamlets.
  • Best season: May–June and September–October for mild temperatures and lower forest-fire risk.
  • Local market: A weekly market runs on Fridays in the village square, selling regional cheese, honey, and smoked meats.
  • Altitude note: Pack a light layer for evenings even in summer — temperatures drop sharply after sunset at this elevation.
