About Săpânța
Săpânța: The Village of the Merry Cemetery
Săpânța is a village in Maramureș County, northern Romania, roughly 10 km from the Ukrainian border. It is known internationally for the Merry Cemetery (Cimitirul Vesel), a UNESCO-listed cultural site where hand-carved oak crosses bear colorful painted scenes and witty verses describing each resident's life. Sculptor Stan Ioan Pătraș began the tradition in 1935, and the practice continues today under his apprentice Dumitru Pop.
