Águilas sits on the southeastern coast of Murcia, Spain, where the Sierra Almenara mountains meet the Mediterranean. The town's coastline stretches across more than 30 beaches and coves — many with Blue Flag status — sheltered by volcanic headlands that give the shoreline its distinctive rugged outline. The 16th-century Castle of San Juan de las Águilas dominates the clifftop above the port, a visible marker of the town's history as a strategic coastal fortification.
Visitors arrive primarily for the beaches: Playa de Poniente near the town center, and quieter coves like Cala Cocedores to the south, accessible only on foot or by boat. The town's February carnival is one of the most celebrated in the Region of Murcia, drawing tens of thousands over five days. Fishing remains active — the daily fish auction at the port (lonja) operates on weekday mornings and reflects the town's working maritime economy.
Águilas lies approximately 100 km southwest of Murcia city and 80 km east of Almería. The nearest airport is Murcia International (RMU), around 90 km away. The town has a compact historic center within walking distance of the main beaches, making a car unnecessary once you arrive.
