About Cartagena
Cartagena: Roman Ruins and a Natural Deep-Water Harbour
Cartagena sits on Spain's southeastern Mediterranean coast, in the Region of Murcia, roughly 50 km south of Murcia city. Founded by Carthaginian general Hasdrubal around 227 BC as Qart Hadasht, the city later became a key Roman naval base. That layered history is still visible street-level: the Roman Theatre of Cartagena, uncovered in 1988 and seating 7,000 in its day, stands in the city centre beside a dedicated museum. The Punic Wall and the Augusteum add further archaeological depth within easy walking distance.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster near the Puerto de Cartagena waterfront and along Calle Mayor, the main pedestrian artery. The Barrio del Foro Romano district places guests steps from the theatre and the hilltop Castillo de la Concepción, which offers views over the five surrounding hills and the harbour. Budget and mid-range options expand toward the El Ensanche grid north of the old town.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Renfe trains connect Cartagena to Murcia in about 50 minutes; the AVE high-speed line does not serve the city directly.
- Best time to visit: Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) bring mild temperatures around 20 °C.
- Naval Museum: The Museo Naval de Cartagena is free to enter and covers Spain's seafaring history from this strategic port.
