Plan your stay in Albacete, Spain — home of the September Feria, historic knife-making craft, and fast AVE rail links to Madrid in under two hours.
Albacete sits on the La Mancha plateau in south-central Spain, roughly 250 km southeast of Madrid and 150 km inland from Valencia. The city of around 175,000 people is the capital of Albacete province and one of the fastest-growing urban centres in Castilla-La Mancha. It earned its reputation over centuries as Spain's knife-making capital — the craft dates to at least the 16th century and the Museo de la Cuchillería on Calle del Marqués de Molíns still documents the trade in full detail.
Visitors arrive for several distinct reasons. The Feria de Albacete, held each September since 1783, is one of Spain's oldest and largest fairs, drawing over a million attendees across eight days. The old quarter around the Catedral de San Juan Bautista — a Gothic-Renaissance structure begun in the 16th century — anchors the historic core. The nearby Parque Abelardo Sánchez, designed in the late 19th century, gives the city a formal green lung close to the centre. Day-trippers use Albacete as a base for the Roman site of Segóbriga, roughly 80 km north, or the wetlands of Las Tablas de Daimiel national park.
Albacete is served by its own AVE high-speed rail station, placing Madrid just over 55 minutes away by fast train. The city's hotel stock ranges from business-oriented three-star properties near the train station to independent boutique options in the old town.
