About Chinchilla de Montearagón

Chinchilla de Montearagón

Chinchilla de Montearagón rises on a rocky hill 14 km southeast of Albacete, its 15th-century castle dominating the plateau of La Mancha at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level. The castle served for centuries as a state prison — Francisco de Quevedo was among its most famous inmates — and today its restored keep offers panoramic views across the Manchegan plain toward the Sierra de Alcaraz. The old town below preserves a compact grid of Renaissance civil architecture: the arcaded Plaza Mayor, the Iglesia de Santa María del Salvador with its Gothic portal, and ceramic-tiled facades that reflect the town's long tradition of Hispano-Moresque pottery.

Visitors come primarily for heritage tourism and the ceramics trade. Chinchilla's workshop tradition dates back to Moorish occupation and the local blue-and-white glazed ware remains collectible. The town also attracts day-trippers from Albacete and travellers on the A-31 corridor between Madrid and Alicante. Semana Santa processions and the late-summer Feria draw regional crowds, while walkers use the surrounding paths to reach the castle ramparts and the views beyond.

The nearest rail connection is Albacete–Los Llanos station, served by AVE high-speed trains from Madrid in under 70 minutes. Local bus services link the town to Albacete several times daily. Accommodation options are limited within Chinchilla itself; most travellers base themselves in Albacete and visit on a half-day excursion.
