About Alhama de Almería

Alhama de Almería sits in the Andarax river valley, roughly 25 km northwest of Almería city, at the southern edge of the Sierra Nevada. The town's name derives from the Arabic al-hammam — meaning thermal bath — and that etymology still defines the place. Hot springs here have drawn visitors since Roman times; the Balneario de Sierra Alhamilla, operating since the 18th century, remains the area's most recognisable landmark and a working spa resort.

Most visitors arrive for the thermal waters and the surrounding semi-arid landscape, which sits within the Almería Geopark — a UNESCO-recognised territory covering some 2,300 km² of volcanic and karst geology. Hikers use Alhama de Almería as a base for trails into the Tabernas Desert to the east and the Sierra de Gádor to the west. The population of roughly 2,800 keeps the town quiet year-round, with few crowds even in summer — a contrast to the coastal resorts 60 km south along the Costa de Almería.

The local economy mixes small-scale agriculture, thermal tourism, and commuter traffic toward Almería capital. Accommodation options are limited — primarily rural guesthouses and the balneario hotel itself — making early booking advisable for weekend visits in spring and autumn, when trail conditions are at their best.
