Roquetas de Mar sits on the Costa de Almería in southeastern Spain, roughly 20 km southwest of Almería city. The municipality stretches along a low-lying coastline where calm, shallow waters and more than 300 days of annual sunshine have shaped a resort town built around beach tourism. The old fishing quarter of Las Salinas contrasts with the modern hotel strip along Playa de las Salinas and Playa Serena — two broad sandy beaches that together extend several kilometres. A 16th-century watchtower, the Torre de los Perdigones, still stands near the harbour as a remnant of coastal defence against Barbary pirates.

Visitors are predominantly European families and couples seeking reliable warm weather outside the peak northern-European summer. Spanish domestic tourists from Andalucía and Madrid fill the town from June through September. The surrounding Campo de Dalías — one of Europe's largest greenhouse agricultural zones — gives the area an economic backbone beyond tourism, and the contrast between the plastic-covered plains inland and the resort coast is one of the region's defining visual features. Divers and snorkellers are drawn to the rocky reefs near the Punta Entinas-Sabinar nature reserve, a protected wetland just west of town.

Roquetas de Mar has a municipal aquarium — Aquarium Roquetas — open year-round on the seafront promenade. Almería Airport (LEI) is approximately 25 km away and receives direct flights from the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands, making the town accessible without a connecting flight from northern Europe.
