About Girona

Girona: Medieval Walls, Jewish Quarter, and the Costa Brava Gateway

Girona sits 100 km northeast of Barcelona along the Onyar River, where four distinct historic layers — Roman foundations, a walled Call (Jewish Quarter), a Romanesque cathedral, and a Modernista market — stack on a single hillside. The Cathedral of Santa Maria, completed in 1038 and enlarged through the 17th century, has the widest Gothic nave in the world at 22.98 metres. The coloured houses of the Barri Vell lining the Onyar have appeared in Game of Thrones productions, but the medieval core predates that fame by centuries.

Where to Stay

Most hotels concentrate in three zones: Barri Vell (the old town, inside the walls), the Eixample district west of the river for mid-range options, and the area around Girona–Costa Brava Airport — 13 km south — for transit-focused stays. Budget travellers find better value in Girona than in Barcelona, with 3-star properties commonly under €100/night outside July–August.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: High-speed AVE trains connect Girona to Barcelona-Sants in 38 minutes; regional trains take about 1 hr 20 min.
  • Best season: April–June and September–October offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds than the coastal summer peak.
  • Day trips: Costa Brava beaches at Platja d'Aro lie 35 km east; the Salvador Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres is 37 km north.
