About Huarte / Uharte

Huarte / Uharte

Huarte — known in Basque as Uharte — sits on the left bank of the Arga River, roughly 5 kilometres northeast of Pamplona's old city walls. The municipality belongs to the Comarca of Pamplona and forms part of the urban belt that expanded rapidly after the 1980s, making it one of the youngest-feeling settlements in Navarre despite records of the village dating to medieval times. The Arga cuts a green corridor through the valley here, and the riverside path connects directly to Pamplona's network of cycle lanes — a practical detail for visitors who want to stay outside the city centre during the San Fermín festival in early July, when accommodation inside Pamplona commands peak prices.

Most visitors arrive as an overflow base for Pamplona, 10–15 minutes by local bus (line 9) or on foot along the riverbank. The town itself offers a quieter residential character: a parish church, a municipal sports complex, and several pintxos bars along Calle Mayor. The surrounding hillsides give clear views toward the Sierra de Aralar to the east. Hikers using the GR-12 trail through the Arga valley often pass through Huarte as a staging point before ascending toward the pre-Pyrenean foothills.

Hotels and guesthouses in Huarte are limited in number but well-connected; the nearest major hotel concentration is along the Pamplona ring road, reachable in under 10 minutes by car.
