About Oláibar

Oláibar

Oláibar is a small rural municipality in the Ulzama Valley, Navarre, set among beech forests and green hills roughly 20 kilometres north of Pamplona. The valley follows the Ulzama River, and the municipality groups several scattered hamlets — Eltzaburu, Gerendiain, Redin, and others — each preserving traditional Basque-Navarrese stone farmhouses known as caseríos. The landscape shifts with altitude: lower pastures give way to dense forest that feeds into the broader Pyrenean foothills to the north.

Visitors come primarily for walking and cycling on quiet lanes connecting the valley hamlets, and for access to the Ulzama natural corridor, which links to longer routes toward the Sierra de Aralar. The area sits within a region known for txakoli wine production and cider culture closer to the Basque border, and local markets in nearby Iroz and Lanz supply the valley. Lanz itself, 8 kilometres north, hosts a well-documented carnival tradition dating to medieval times, drawing visitors each February.

Oláibar has no large hotel infrastructure — accommodation concentrates in rural guesthouses and agritourism properties across the hamlets. The nearest rail connection is at Pamplona, with bus services running along the NA-121-A road through the valley on weekday schedules.
