About Villava / Atarrabia
Villava / Atarrabia
Villava — known in Basque as Atarrabia — sits on the eastern edge of Pamplona in the Comarca of Pamplona, Navarre. The town is best known as the birthplace of Miguel Induráin, the cyclist who won five consecutive Tour de France titles between 1991 and 1995. A statue of Induráin stands near the town centre, and the local sports complex bears his name. The River Arga runs along the western boundary, separating Villava from Pamplona proper by less than two kilometres.
Most visitors arrive as an extension of a Pamplona stay — particularly during the San Fermín festival each July — or as pilgrims on the Camino Francés, which passes through the area on its way into the Navarrese capital. The town also draws cycling enthusiasts who trace Induráin's training routes through the Pyrenean foothills to the north. Villava's compact grid of residential streets and local bars offers a quieter, more affordable base than central Pamplona during peak festival weeks.
Villava municipality covers roughly 1.7 square kilometres and had a population of approximately 10,500 as of the early 2020s. Direct bus lines connect the town to Pamplona's city centre in under ten minutes.
