About La Virgen del Camino
La Virgen del Camino
La Virgen del Camino sits 5 km west of León on the N-120, where the Camino Francés — the most-walked route of the Camino de Santiago — passes through before pilgrims reach the city. The town's defining landmark is the Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Camino, rebuilt in 1961 by architect Francisco Coello de Portugal. Its concrete facade carries thirteen bronze figures sculpted by Josep Maria Subirachs, the Catalan artist later known for his work on the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. The original venerated image inside the church dates to a 15th-century apparition tradition, making this one of the oldest active pilgrimage points in the León stretch of the route.
Visitors fall into two main groups: pilgrims covering the last stage into León, and day-trippers from the city who come specifically for the Subirachs sculptures. The town offers a quieter, lower-cost base than central León while keeping Leon's cathedral — the Gothic Catedral de Santa María, renowned for its 1,800 square metres of medieval stained glass — within a short bus or taxi ride.
The municipal bus line 2 connects La Virgen del Camino to central León in roughly 20 minutes. Most accommodation consists of small guesthouses and pilgrim hostels; the town anchors the western approach to León for walkers on Stage 21 of the standard Camino Francés itinerary.
