About Valverde de la Virgen

Valverde de la Virgen

Valverde de la Virgen sits in the Bernesga river valley, León province, roughly 8 kilometres west of the city of León in the autonomous community of Castile and León. The municipality clusters several villages — La Virgen del Camino chief among them — along the N-120 road and the historic Camino Francés, the main French route of the Camino de Santiago. Pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compostela pass through La Virgen del Camino and its landmark Sanctuary of the Virgin, a modernist concrete church completed in 1961 with twelve outsized apostle sculptures on its facade.

Most visitors are either Camino walkers using the area as a first day's rest after leaving León, or travellers based here for easy access to León's cathedral — a 13th-century Gothic structure renowned for its 1,800 square metres of stained glass. The surrounding terrain is flat meseta with gradual rises toward the Cantabrian foothills to the north, making the walking routes manageable year-round. Local gastronomy follows the broader León tradition: cecina (cured beef), morcilla de León, and Bierzo wines from the comarca to the west.

Valverde de la Virgen has a population of around 5,000 residents spread across its parishes. Bus connections to León city centre run frequently, with journey times under 20 minutes. The municipality sits at approximately 870 metres above sea level, producing cold winters and warm, dry summers.
