About Lónguida / Longida
Lónguida / Longida
Lónguida — known in Basque as Longida — is a small municipality in the Navarre Pyrenean foothills, roughly 40 km northeast of Pamplona along the Irati river valley. The area sits at the edge of the Irati Forest, one of the largest beech-fir woodlands in Europe, which draws hikers and birdwatchers from across the Iberian Peninsula. Medieval stone villages dot the valley — Aoiz, the comarca's main town, sits just downstream and serves as the practical base for exploring the area.
Visitors come primarily for outdoor pursuits: whitewater kayaking on the Irati River, autumn mushroom foraging in the forest, and the Camino de Santiago variants that cross this corner of Navarre. The municipality is part of the Lónguida Valley comarca, where Basque and Navarrese cultural identities overlap — place names appear in both Spanish and Euskara. Rural tourism is the dominant accommodation model here; farmhouse stays (casas rurales) are common, and the local diet centers on lamb, river trout, and Navarrese rosé wine.
The nearest commercial airport is Pamplona (PNA), approximately 45 km southwest. Public transport is limited; a car is the practical requirement for reaching the valley's scattered villages.
