About Oviedo
Oviedo: Asturian Capital Between the Cantabrian Mountains and the Coast
Oviedo sits 25 km south of Gijón and roughly 30 km from the Cantabrian Sea, at 336 metres above sea level in the heart of Asturias. The old city centre, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate through its pre-Romanesque monuments, holds three 9th-century churches — Santa María del Naranco, San Miguel de Lillo, and the Cámara Santa inside the cathedral — built under King Alfonso II and Ramiro I. The cathedral itself began construction in 1388 and was not completed until the 16th century. The pedestrianised Calle Uría connects the train station to the old town, passing the Campo de San Francisco park.
Where to Stay in Oviedo
Most hotels cluster around Calle Uría, the Plaza de la Escandalera, and the Bulevar Padre Suárez corridor, putting guests within a 10-minute walk of the cathedral and the Mercado El Fontán — the city's covered market operating since the 18th century. A secondary cluster sits near the HUCA hospital campus on the northern edge of the city.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Oviedo's Asturias Airport (OVD) is 47 km northwest; trains connect the city to Madrid Chamartín in roughly 4.5 hours via ALSA or Renfe.
- Weather: Expect frequent Atlantic rain year-round; pack a waterproof layer even in summer.
- Local food: The Mercado El Fontán area concentrates sidrerías (cider houses) serving fabada asturiana and local cabrales cheese.
