About Villaviciosa
Villaviciosa
Villaviciosa sits on the Ría de Villaviciosa estuary in eastern Asturias, roughly 30 km east of Oviedo along the A-8 motorway. The town is the self-declared capital of Asturian cider — sidra natural — and the surrounding council (concejo) contains some of the oldest apple orchards and llagares (cider presses) in Spain. The 13th-century Church of Santa María de la Oliva, a Romanesque-Gothic transition monument, anchors the historic centre and marks the spot where Holy Roman Emperor Charles V first set foot on Spanish soil in 1517 after landing at the nearby beach of Tazones.
Visitors arrive for three overlapping reasons: cider culture, coastal walking, and Romanesque heritage. The Camino de Santiago's Coastal Route passes through the town, drawing pilgrims and long-distance walkers year-round. The estuary itself is a designated natural reserve — Reserva Natural Parcial de la Ría de Villaviciosa — supporting migratory birds and attracting birdwatchers from across Europe. Surfers use the beaches at Rodiles, 8 km from the town centre, which produces some of the longest river-mouth waves on the Cantabrian coast.
The local festival La Fiesta de la Sidra Natural, held each September, draws tens of thousands of visitors to the old quarter for escanciado competitions — the Asturian practice of pouring cider from height to oxygenate it. Hotels in Villaviciosa range from rural casas de aldea in the apple-growing valleys to small urban hotels within walking distance of the Church of Santa María.
