Oviedo is the capital of Asturias, a region on Spain's northern Atlantic coast. The city sits roughly 30 kilometres from the sea and about 450 kilometres north of Madrid. Its old quarter — declared a Historic-Artistic Site — centres on the pre-Romanesque Cathedral of San Salvador, begun in the 9th century and still dominating the skyline. Oviedo has a temperate oceanic climate — expect frequent rain year-round, with mild summers rarely exceeding 25 °C. The city is served by Asturias Airport (OVD), located approximately 47 kilometres northwest in Ranón, with direct connections to Madrid, Barcelona, and several European cities.
