About Tarifa

Tarifa: Europe's Southernmost Wind Capital

Tarifa sits at the southern tip of continental Europe, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean at the Strait of Gibraltar. Africa is visible just 14 km across the water — Tangier, Morocco is reachable by ferry in under an hour. The town's medieval walls, built under Moorish rule in the 10th century, still enclose a compact old quarter of whitewashed lanes and a well-preserved castle, Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster near the Playa de los Lances, a 7 km Atlantic beach that channels near-constant Levante and Poniente winds, making Tarifa the benchmark destination for kitesurfing and windsurfing in Europe. The Valdevaqueros dune area at the northern end of the beach draws advanced riders. Boutique guesthouses occupy the old medina-style streets of Casco Antiguo, while larger properties line the N-340 coastal road toward Punta Paloma.

Practical Tips

  • Wind: The Levante (easterly) blows 100+ days per year; pack a windproof layer even in summer.
  • Ferry: Ferries to Tangier run multiple times daily from the port; carry a valid passport.
  • Getting around: No reliable urban bus network within town — the old quarter is walkable in 15 minutes end to end.
  • Season: May–September for water sports; October–March for whale-watching in the strait.
