About Teruel
Teruel
Teruel sits at 915 metres above sea level on a plateau in southern Aragón, roughly 300 km from both Madrid and Barcelona. The city holds a rare distinction: four towers in the Mudéjar style — Torre de El Salvador, Torre de San Martín, the cathedral tower, and Torre de San Pedro — were collectively inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1986. This Islamic-influenced brickwork, layered with geometric ceramic tiles, defines the skyline and sets Teruel apart from any other Spanish provincial capital.
Two types of travellers dominate the visitor mix. Architecture and heritage tourists come specifically for the Mudéjar ensemble, often pairing the city with Zaragoza or Albarracín, the walled medieval village 37 km to the west. A second group arrives for the Lovers of Teruel — Diego de Marcilla and Isabel de Segura, whose 13th-century story predates Romeo and Juliet; their alabaster tombs lie in the Mausoleum of the Lovers, adjacent to the church of San Pedro. Every February the city stages Las Bodas de Isabel de Segura, a costumed re-enactment drawing tens of thousands.
Teruel is also the capital of one of the least densely populated provinces in the EU, a fact that gives the surrounding Sierra de Albarracín its appeal for hiking and cycling. The city centre is compact — the Plaza del Torico, named for a small bronze bull atop a column, is the social hub. Most hotels concentrate within walking distance of that square.
