Ciutat Vella places guests within a five-minute walk of the Mercado Central (opened 1928, one of Europe's largest covered markets) and the Gothic Cathedral, which houses a chalice claimed to be the Holy Grail. Malvarrosa and Patacona suit travellers who prioritise beach access over city-centre walkability.

Getting Around

Valencia's Metrovalencia network covers the airport, the port, and the suburbs on nine lines. The EMT bus grid and a flat cycling network — over 180 km of bike lanes — handle the urban core. The Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, Santiago Calatrava's science-and-arts complex completed in 2005, lies 2 km south of El Carmen along the former Turia riverbed, now a 9 km linear park.

Practical Tips

• Best months: March–May and September–October; July–August is hot and crowded.
• Paella origin: the dish originates from the rice paddies of La Albufera, 10 km south — seek restaurants that still use wood-fire burners.
