About Andijon
Andijon: Fergana Valley's Eastern Gateway
Andijon sits at the eastern tip of the Fergana Valley in Uzbekistan, roughly 350 km east of Tashkent near the Kyrgyzstan border. The city traces its roots to at least the 9th century and served as a staging post on the eastern branch of the Silk Road. It is the birthplace of Babur (1483), the Timurid prince who went on to found the Mughal Empire — a historical fact that sets Andijon apart from other Uzbek cities of similar size.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster near Babur Square and along Navoi Street in the compact city centre, putting guests within walking distance of the Jome Mosque (19th century) and the covered Andijon Bazaar, one of the Fergana Valley's largest markets for spices, dried fruit, and locally woven silk. Business travellers connected to the city's light-manufacturing sector make up a significant share of hotel demand.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Andijon Airport operates domestic flights from Tashkent; the train journey takes around 5–6 hours.
- Currency: Uzbek som; card acceptance is limited outside central hotels.
- Climate: Summers exceed 35 °C; spring (April–May) offers moderate temperatures for exploring on foot.
- Language: Uzbek is primary; Russian is understood in hotels and larger restaurants.
