About Tashkent
Tashkent: Central Asia's Soviet-Modernist Capital
Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, is Central Asia's largest city with a population of roughly 2.5 million. Rebuilt almost entirely after a 1966 earthquake, the city's layout reflects Soviet urban planning — wide boulevards, metro stations decorated with tilework and chandeliers, and monumental plazas. The Khast Imam complex houses one of the world's oldest Quran manuscripts, dated to the 7th century. The Chorsu Bazaar, a domed market in the Old City (Eski Shahar) district, sells spices, dried fruit, and non bread baked on-site.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster around Amir Temur Square in the city centre and along Shota Rustaveli Street, placing guests within walking distance of the metro's Hamid Olimjon station. The Mirabad and Yakkasaray districts offer quieter mid-range options a short taxi ride from the main sights. International chains operate near the Hilton Tashkent City, which opened in 2018 on the east side of Amir Temur Square.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The metro runs four lines and costs under $0.20 per ride; signs are in Uzbek and Russian.
- Currency: The Uzbek som is cash-dominant; ATMs in the city centre dispense local currency reliably.
- Climate: Summers exceed 40 °C; spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are cooler for sightseeing.
- Connections: Tashkent International Airport is 12 km south of the city centre, roughly 25 minutes by taxi.
