About Termiz
Termiz: Uzbekistan's Ancient Buddhist Frontier
Termiz sits on the north bank of the Amu Darya river, directly across from Afghanistan, in the Surxondaryo region of southern Uzbekistan. Founded over 2,500 years ago, the city holds one of Central Asia's densest concentrations of early Buddhist monuments. Fayaz-Tepe and Kara-Tepe, two rock-cut monastery complexes dating to the 1st–4th centuries CE, lie within a few kilometres of the city centre. The Archaeological Museum of Termez displays Kushan-era sculpture, Greco-Bactrian coins, and Buddhist relics excavated from sites that line the ancient Silk Road corridor.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate along Alpomish ko'chasi and near the central bazaar district. Most properties are mid-range Soviet-era renovations or newer guesthouses catering to archaeologists, researchers, and overland travellers crossing into Afghanistan at the Friendship Bridge, 10 km south of the city. Room rates are among the lowest in Uzbekistan.
