About Dubrovnik

The most practical bases in Dubrovnik are the Old Town (Stari Grad) for walking the 14th-century city walls and Stradun; Lapad Peninsula for larger hotels with beach access and lower nightly rates; and Ploče for quieter stays minutes from Pile Gate. Most visitors stay three to four nights; Dubrovnik Airport is 20 km south, roughly 30 minutes by transfer.

Where to Stay

Old Town (Stari Grad) puts guests inside the medieval walls, steps from the Stradun promenade and the Rector's Palace. Properties here are mostly small guesthouses and boutique hotels; expect premium rates and noise from day-trippers until late evening. Lapad Peninsula, 4 km west, suits families and longer stays — hotels are larger, beaches are walkable, and rates run noticeably lower than within the walls. Ploče, just east of Pile Gate, balances easy Old Town access with a residential feel; the cliff-side Hotel Excelsior sits in this neighbourhood with direct sea views.

Getting Around

The Old Town is car-free. City buses link Lapad and Pile Gate frequently throughout the day. Water taxis run from the Old Town harbour to Lokrum Island in 15 minutes and to the Elaphiti Islands in under an hour. The cable car to Mount Srđ (412 m) departs from the Ploče side and provides a full aerial view of the walled city below.

Practical Tips

  • Crowds: July and August bring peak visitor numbers; May, June, and September offer shorter queues at the walls.
  • Wall circuit: The city wall walk is 1,940 metres; allow 90 minutes and carry water — shade is minimal.
  • Ferry connections: Jadrolinija ferries link Dubrovnik port to Split (4.5 hours) and Rijeka overnight.
  • Currency: Croatia adopted the euro in January 2023; no exchange needed for eurozone travellers.
